.com.au vs .com: Which Is Better for an Australian Business?

Updated 15 September 2026 · 4 min read

If your customers are mainly in Australia, choose .com.au. If your business is genuinely international, .com may be the better fit.

That is the short answer. And for most Australian small businesses, it is enough to make the decision.

But your domain will appear on every quote, email, advertisement and referral for years. So before you register one—or both—let us make sure the choice supports where your business is actually going.

.com.au vs .com: what is the difference?

.com.au is a regulated Australian commercial namespace. To register one, you need an Australian presence and must satisfy auDA’s current eligibility and allocation rules. The requested name generally needs to match, abbreviate or be closely connected to the registrant’s qualifying name, trade mark, goods, services or activity.

.com is a global generic extension. It is not reserved for Australian businesses and does not have the same local eligibility requirements. That makes it flexible, but it also means the extension alone tells a visitor nothing about where the business operates.

Neither extension automatically produces better search rankings. Google’s current guidance focuses on helpful, reliable, people-first content. Choose the extension that makes the business clearest to customers, then build a useful website behind it.

When .com.au is the better choice

Choose .com.au when your customers, services and reputation are primarily Australian. This commonly includes tradies, consultants, retailers, local professionals and small businesses selling throughout Australia.

The extension provides immediate context. Someone who sees your address can reasonably expect an Australian connection before opening the website. That can be reassuring when they are deciding who to call, where an order ships from or which laws and currency may apply.

It also creates a useful eligibility barrier. Not everyone can register any .com.au name they like. That does not guarantee a business is trustworthy, but the namespace is designed for eligible commercial use rather than unrestricted global registration.

Before paying, confirm your eligibility and the connection between the proposed domain and your business. Read the complete .com.au domain requirements or follow our guide to registering a .com.au domain.

When .com may be the better choice

Choose .com when the brand is intended for an international audience, the business sells globally or the name represents a product that should not feel tied to one country.

A software company, international ecommerce brand or global publication may benefit from the familiarity of .com. It is recognised almost everywhere and gives the brand room to enter new markets without changing its primary web address.

The trade-off is availability. Many short .com domains were registered years ago, so the exact match may be taken or offered at a high resale price. Do not weaken a strong brand with confusing spelling, extra hyphens or random numbers simply to force a .com address.

If the .com is unavailable but the business serves Australia, an eligible exact-match .com.au may be clearer than an awkward global variation.

Should an Australian business register both?

If both are available at normal registration prices, securing them can be a sensible brand-protection decision. It reduces the chance of another business creating confusion and captures customers who type the wrong extension from memory.

Do not run two duplicate websites. Select one primary domain, redirect the second to it and use the primary address consistently across email, signage, profiles and marketing.

For a business focused on Australia, the usual setup is .com.au as the main domain with .com redirected. For a global brand headquartered in Australia, that order may be reversed.

Five checks before you register

  1. Confirm the name is short, clear and easy to say aloud.
  2. Check business names, trade marks, social handles and search results.
  3. Verify .com.au eligibility before purchasing.
  4. Use the eligible registrant’s details and retain account access.
  5. Enable multi-factor authentication, automatic renewal and an independent expiry reminder.

Make the decision once, protect it properly and get back to building the business.
